Difference between standard tantalum capacitors and polymer tantalum capacitors

The main difference between standard tantalum capacitors and polymer tantalum capacitors is the type of electrolyte they use. Standard tantalum capacitors use a tantalum powder electrolyte, while polymer tantalum capacitors use a conductive polymer electrolyte.

Polymer tantalum capacitors generally have lower ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) compared to standard tantalum capacitors. This means that they can provide better filtering performance, higher ripple current handling capability, and faster transient response. Additionally, polymer tantalum capacitors typically have longer lifetimes and better reliability compared to standard tantalum capacitors.

However, polymer tantalum capacitors also tend to be more expensive than standard tantalum capacitors, and may not be suitable for all applications, such as water meter, energy meter, gas meter, we do not suggest to use polymer tantalum capacitors, as it’s high leakage.
