What is supercapacitor

Definition of supercapacitor
Supercapacitor is a new energy storage device between traditional capacitors (usually electrolytic capacitors) and secondary batteries (rechargeable batteries, currently mainly lead-acid batteries, lithium batteries, etc.). It has the high power of traditional capacitors. At the same time, supercapacitors also have the characteristics of high specific power, large current charge and discharge capacity, long life, wide temperature range, especially good ultra-low temperature performance, high reliability, maintenance-free, green and environmentally friendly.


Comparison of supercapacitors and traditional capacitors

Supercapacitor energy storage is a physical process, while battery energy storage is an electrochemical reaction process. Pls find below essential difference:
1)The first difference between supercapacitors and ordinary capacitors is the capacity. The capacity of ordinary capacitors is usually in the microfarad level, while supercapacitors are measured in farads. 1 farad = 1 million microfarads, so supercapacitors are also called farad capacitors.
2)Supercapacitors have good power characteristics and can charge and discharge quickly with large currents. The power density is dozens of times that of lithium-ion batteries. (A 5F supercapacitor can release an instantaneous current of more than 18A, and a 3500F can release more than 2000A.) The charging and discharging time is Short, the charging circuit requirements are simple, and there is no memory effect. However, the energy density of the battery is higher than that of the supercapacitor, and the battery can store more energy under the same volume;
3)Supercapacitor charging and discharging is a physical process, so it has a longer life. The number of charge and discharge cycles reaches 500,000 to 1 million times. The number of charge and discharge cycles of batteries is limited. Lead-acid batteries are charged and discharged 500 times, and lithium batteries are 500--1000 times. times, different types have different charging and discharging times;
4)The working temperature range of supercapacitors is wider, from -40℃ to +70℃, while ordinary batteries basically cannot discharge electricity or can discharge very little electricity below zero; in some applications that require high-power discharge, they also need In higher energy situations, supercapacitors and batteries can be used together to give full play to the advantages of both.
Materials of supercapacitors, environmentally friendly

All raw materials used in supercapacitors are environmentally friendly products. Its core raw materials are activated carbon (environmentally friendly, widely used in environmental protection, medical and health industries), electrolyte (neutral, does not contain strong acids and alkalis), aluminum foil, aluminum shell (metallic state can be recycled), heat shrink tube (in line with EU environmental certification ), which can make up for the environmental damage caused by traditional energy storage devices. The production, manufacturing and recycling process of supercapacitors is an energy-saving and environmentally friendly process.

The energy storage process of supercapacitor is a physical process, and its charge and discharge efficiency is very high, which can reach more than 98%. Therefore, supercapacitor is an energy-saving product.
Long life and maintenance-free allow supercapacitors to replace the original battery solution in products that require long life, difficult maintenance or high cost, thereby improving the performance of the product and reducing the user's cost of use.


Application of supercapacitors:

Supercapacitors are widely used in industrial fields, such as smart meters, communication modules, concentrators, vehicle-mounted equipment, electric toys, emergency lighting, elevators, tax control cash registers, electric forklifts, medical equipment, security equipment, X-ray machines, etc.


Supercapacitor precautions:

■ Do not use it at a voltage higher than the rated voltage;
■ Supercapacitors cannot be forcibly twisted or turned upside down;
■ The supercapacitor temperature should not exceed the upper or lower rated temperature limit;
■ The charging voltage should not exceed the rated voltage;
■ Avoid direct sunlight;
■ Avoid direct contact with water, salt water, oil, acid or alkali. In applications where there may be high humidity or large temperature and humidity differences, it is recommended to seal the terminal end of the lead after welding to isolate water vapor and avoid lead pin corrosion;
■ Supercapacitor has fixed polarity, please pay attention to its polarity when assembling;
■ Operating temperature and life.
